Hair product guide for desi hair: what actually works
Pomades, clays, creams, sprays. A plain-language guide to what each product does and which one suits dense South Asian hair.
Walk into any chemist and there are forty hair products on the shelf. Half of them aren't built for thick desi hair, and the other half are misnamed.
Here is a plain breakdown of what each product type actually does, and which one to reach for depending on the cut you walked out of the shop with.
Matte clay — the everyday default
Strong hold, no shine. The right choice for textured crops, messy side parts, and most modern fades with length on top.
Warm a pea-sized amount in your palms first. Work from the back of the head forward. Style with your fingers, not a comb.
Pomade — for slick, classic looks
Glossy finish, medium hold. Use for side parts and slicked-back styles where you want shine.
Water-based pomades wash out easily. Oil-based ones hold longer but need shampoo to remove. For desi hair, water-based is almost always the right call.
Sea-salt spray — for natural texture
Adds grit and volume without weight. Spray on damp hair, scrunch with your hands, air dry or blast with a hairdryer on low.
Best for wavy desi hair or longer crops where you want movement.
What to avoid
Supermarket gels. They flake by lunchtime on dense hair, and the alcohol dries out your scalp.
Heavy waxes. They look fine in the mirror but turn greasy by the end of the day.
