Your first haircut in Australia as a desi man: what to expect

If you've just moved from the subcontinent and you've never been to an Australian barber, here's how the appointment is different — and what to bring.

Your first haircut in Australia as a desi man: what to expect

If you grew up getting your hair cut at a corner shop in Delhi, Lahore, Dhaka, Colombo or Karachi, the Australian barber appointment will feel both familiar and different. Same chair, same scissors — but a different rhythm.

Appointments, not walk-ins

Most good barbers in Australia book by appointment. Walking in and waiting is less common. Call ahead or book online, even for a quick cut.

Bring a photo

Describing a cut in words rarely works the first visit, even when both of you speak the same language. A photo on your phone takes ten seconds and saves a lot of guessing.

Tipping

Tipping is not expected in Australia the way it is in some other countries. A small tip for great service is appreciated but never required. The price on the menu is the price you pay.

Why a desi barber matters

Hair type matters. A barber who has cut hundreds of desi heads will know how thick your hair is before the cape goes on, and will cut accordingly. That experience is what you're paying for.
